New York, NY (May 31, 2020) ö Three-time World Boxing Association (WBA) champion Wilfredo Vazquez will fight Juan Lazcano for the vacant North American Boxing Federation (NABF) lightweight title on SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING on Friday, June 16, from the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Vazquez replaces former world champion James Leija, who suffered a bad cut during sparring. In the main event, the World Boxing Councilâs No. 10-ranked contender Andrew Golota (35-4, 29 KOs) faces former world champion Orlin Norris (50-5, 1 NC, 27 KOs) in an important 10-round heavyweight fight. SHOWTIME is scheduled to televise both fights in their entirety beginning at 11 PM ET/PT
Vazquez (52-8-3, 38 KOs) of Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico, is the only boxer to win WBA titles in three different weight classes. He won the WBA bantamweight title in October 1987 and made one successful defense. Vazquez won the WBA junior featherweight title in March 1992 and made nine successful defenses. Vazquez made four successful defenses of the WBA featherweight title he won in May 1996. Overall, Vazquez, a 19-year-veteran, is 16-4-1 in world title fights. Lazcano (22-2-1, 16 KOs), of Sacramento, California, by way of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, is an exciting up-and-comer who has won eight in a row. Lazcano captured the World Boxing Federation 135-pound title on a fourth-round knockout over Daniel Lujan on Feb. 20, 1997.
